Danila (Daniel) Vassilieff. Born in Russia 1897 – died 1958 Bullen VIC). Vassilieff was a painter and sculptor who grew up in Russia and served in the Russian Civil War. After being captured and then escaping the Red Army, he made his way to China, eventually moving to Australia in 1923. He took Australian Citizenship in 1929 and promptly moved to Paris then onto Rio de Janeiro. He returned to Australia in 1935.

Tim Storrier was born on 13 February 1949 in Sydney and, although extensively travelled, still resides with his wife Janet in rural NSW.

He has been described as a quintessential "Australian" painter. Storrier's images of low horizons and the vast skies of Australia are truly magnificent. His paintings of fire, refer to his works of 'Fire Lines', are truly breathtaking.

Garry Shead was born in Sydney in 1942 and is accomplished as a painter, filmmaker, printmaker and ceramic artist. He was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1993 and the Dobell Prize in 2004.

Samuel Thomas Gill (1818-1880)

Gill, born in the UK in 1818 and sailed with his family to Australia 1839. He began his artistic life working on pencil sketches and water colour portraits.

After travelling to the Victorian goldfields in 1852 he was acknowledged as one of the leading artists of the goldfields at that time. Later (in 1850s/60s) his skill as a lithographer produced a great number of works (refer to Victorian Gold Diggings and Diggers of Victoria) for organisations such as the Melbourne Public Library. Falling on hard times, he died from an aneurism, broke and alone, in Melbourne in 1880.

William Robinson (1936- )

Internationally acclaimed, Robinson didnt begin painting full time until he was in his 50s, and is the only living Australian with a gallery within a major institution, QUT Brisbane, dedicated solely to his work.

His broad range of art includes epic landscapes, portraits and, in these later years, still life. He has won the Archibald Prize twice (1987, 1995).

Rosslynd Piggott, born VIC 1958, studied in Melbourne.

Piggott is known for her misty ghost-like paintings, scenes of surrealistic dreams leaving the viewer with a sense of drifting through a piece of her art. Her interests include glass-blowing, painting, drawing, photography and fabrics.

John Olsen AO OBE (Born 1928)

Olsen has never considered himself a painter of abstracts having stated "I have never painted an abstract in my life", he deems his work more evocative art.

He is represented in all Australian State gallery collections and proudly won the Archibald Prize in 2005.

Australian artist Tim Maguire was born in the UK in June 1958. Swansea Gallery had the immense pleasure of hosting a very successful exhibition of Tim's work in October 2012.

His work is exciting and colourful and he must be considered one of Australia's most talented and renowned contemporary artists of his time.

Artist: Kerrie Lester

Kerrie Lester (1953-2016) Born in Surrey Hills Sydney. Lester was a finalist on 16 occasions in the Archibald Prize but gave up entering in 2012, probably in protect. She held many solo exhibitions and was once 'artist in residence' at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

She passed away from leukemia following a two year battle in 2016 aged 63

John Coburn AM, born Qld 1925 and died 2006.

Coburn was an abstract painter, set designer, teacher, printmaker and a world-famous tapestry designer. His fondness for art to be ‘precise, clear and deliberate’ was at the heart of his way of thinking and working. A deeply spiritual man, one can only imagine his thoughts at having one of his works accepted for the Vatican collection in Rome.

Jeffrey was born in Adelaide in 1921 and died in Tuscany in 2013 aged 91. He was famous for his modernism in landscape painting and urban vistas with figures being present in many of his art works. These figures he called "impassive observers" and he used them mainly for scale.

Sir Hans Heysen OBE was a born in Germany in 1877 and migrated to Adelaide in SA in 1884 aged 7. Hans most famous pieces depict cattle and sheep surrounded by a background of splendid gum trees. He had a particular talent for depicting light.

Hans Heysen died in 1968.

His family home and garden situated at Hahndorf in the hills of Adelaide is called The Cedars and is open to the public.

Elaine Alys Haxton, AM. Born 1909 - died 1999. She was an Australian artist who worked prolifically in the areas of commercial graphics and print making as well as theatre/costume design over the course of her long career in the Arts.

(James) Haughton Forrest (1826-1925) was born in France to English parents and come to Australia as a married man in 1876, settling in Tasmania.

His art is dominated mainly by stormy maritime scenes, with his landscapes, in complete contrast, depicting tranquility and peace.

Euan Heng was born in Scotland in 1945 and moved to Australia in 1977.

To quote Heng on his style “no vulgar brush strokes and no detail to distract – just gently modulated pigment to activate float shapes of colour. I want the visual response to my new paintings to be rapid, if possible, after which the viewer, should he or she wish, can invest further time in unpacking the content, or in discovering the paintings secrets. By seeking this pictorial suddenness, formally speaking my aim is to avoid the ‘expressionist’, and to privilege instead the flatness of the painting’s surface.”

Graeme Drendel was born in VIC in 1953. His stark Australian landscapes are the background for solitary isolated figures, these figures appear isolated even when depicted surrounded by others.

He was an Archibald Prize finalist in 2018 for a piece titled 'Portrait of Michel'.

Ray Austin Crooke AM was born in Auburn Victoria in 1922. Following many visits to Tahiti, Fiji and New Guinea, Crooke is well known for his Islander art, depicting vibrant works of Islander people and ocean landscapes.

He won the Archibald Prize in 1969.

Crooke passed away in Dec 2015.

Peter Churcher (1964) An Australian born portrait painter who has successfully been displayed at the Archibald Prize exhibition on numerous occasions.

In 2002 Churcher was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial as an official war artist for ‘The War Against Terrorism’ and was sent to the Persian Gulf and Diego Garcia. He and his family currently live in Spain.

Rupert Charles Bunny (1895 – 1947) Bunny was born into an affluent British/German family in Melbourne at the end of the 19th century. Moving to the Continent in 1933 and being fluent in German and French enabled him to assimilate into European society and he was much favoured as an artist in Paris, living there for many years. Brief visits to home with his wife were to follow, until 1933, when he returned to Australia after more than 50 years overseas.

Brack’s piece above formed part of his long series of works from 1978/86 featuring such objects as pencils in intricate patterns.

His works are often considered sardonically humourous.
